Sun damage pigmentation can appear as freckles or dark brown/black spots, also referred to as age spots or liver spots. They vary in size and are usually found on the areas of the body that have most sun exposure such as the face, chest, hands, arms and upper back. These flat spots are caused by increased pigmentation as a direct result of excessive sun exposure.
Excess pigmentation or darker areas of skin, can be related to hormonal imbalances, medically know as melasma or chloasma. It commonly appears in females during and after pregnancy or due to oral contraception pills. Pigmentation can also be caused by skin conditions such as post acne, cuts, open wounds, inflammation and surgery.
