How does laser hair reduction work?

The laser hair reduction process works by sending a beam of laser energy to a group of hair follicles with enough strength to disable the root and the blood supply that assists in regenerating the hair.
The laser beam does not harm the surrounding skin as it finds the hair follicles by targeting melanin (the substance that gives hair colour). Our lasers also feature a patented skin-cooling device, which assists in providing clients a more safe and comfortable experience. It is important to note that the laser process will not work well on people that have red, white, grey or blonde hair.

Is laser hair reduction safe?

Why do I need a consultation?

Consultations are conducted with clients before the treatment to:

Assess if the GentleLASE treatment is appropriate for you
Explain the laser process
Advise pre and post treatment care instructions
Perform a test patch
(This will allow you to feel the laser on your skin and see the results for yourself)
Advise the cost of treatment

Are laser hair reduction treatments painful?

Tolerance levels vary for all. In most cases clients will say that they felt no pain to feeling a flick/s of a rubber band.
Candela’s patented Dynamic Cooling Device (DCD) provides ultimate epidermal cooling for increased client safety and comfort.

How should I prepare before for my treatment?

To minimise the possibility of adverse skin effects we recommend avoiding the following activities for at least 2 to 4 weeks prior to your treatment:

Sun exposure (apply SPF 30 + sunscreen daily)
Solariums
Topical fake tans
Prescription strength exfoliants
DO NOT use tweezers, wax, epi lady, electrolysis, thread or bleach

We recommend shaving or using depilatory creams 24 hours prior to your treatment to minimise sensitivity.
For the face, it is best to leave the area untouched or only use hair removal creams specifically for sensitive skin. Please consult your Skin and Laser Specialist if you have any queries.

Are there any post treatment restrictions?

Your Skin and Laser Specialist will advise you post treatment care instructions during your treatment. In most cases, once the redness has calmed down you are able to resume with normal activities. It is best to treat the area with care as you would a mild sunburn.

Please avoid the following activities until the redness has disappeared:

Use of prescription strength exfoliant creams
Swimming pools and spas with multiple chemicals/ chlorine
Activities that cause excessive perspiration

Please avoid the following activities in between and post treatments:

Sun exposure (apply SPF 30 + sunscreen daily on areas being treated)
Solariums (cover all areas being treated)

Is Laser Hair Reduction permanent?

When qualified and highly trained Skin and Laser Specialists perform treatments such as the team at The Laser Lounge, laser hair reduction is very effective.

We guarantee permanent hair reduction. Our state of the art premium LASER is capable of 95% permanent hair reduction for most skin types, male and female, and can treat ALL body areas. The number of sessions needed to achieve these results may vary from person to person depending on several factors such as age, skin type, amount of hair, hair color, hair texture, etc.

Non-responders are primarily limited to those with blonde, white, grey or red hair. We strongly recommend for you to come in for a FREE consultation so we can assess whether a laser treatment is suitable for you.

How do I know if laser hair reduction treatments are working for me?
You will see results after your VERY FIRST treatment. You will have fewer hairs and they will be finer and weaker. Your skin will be smoother and your hair pores less visible. The results will become more impressive with each successive treatment. Best of all, you won’t need to worry about ingrown hairs or after five shadows.

How many treatments will I need?

For best results, on average we recommend 6 to 8 treatments. This will allow hairs to be disabled effectively during the active growth phase in the Hair Growth Cycle. On some areas, such as the legs, faster results may be achieved. You can expect similar results for the bikini area, underarms, chest area and upper arms. Other areas such as the face and/or back may take a few additional treatments. After completing a treatment course, if required we recommend maintenance touch ups to be performed on the area/s 1 to 3 times a year.

How do I know when to come in for my next treatment?

On average we recommend treating the area 4 to 8 weeks apart. You do not need to wait for the hair to grow back before treating the area. Your Skin and Laser Specialist will assess your individual progress throughout your treatment course, recommending the best time to return for your follow up treatment. If you are uncertain, please feel free to ask our team.

How will I look in between the treatments?

The treated area will be cleared of the majority of visible hairs during the treatment. Remaining treated hairs will shed in approximately 10 to 14 days. Depending on the area, the skin will remain clear and smooth for 4 to 6 weeks before seeing fine hairs starting to grow again. By repeating the sessions on schedule the area should remain hair free and/or have minimal hair growth throughout the entire treatment course and will achieve permanent hair reduction.

Are there any risks or side effects? Will my medication affect my treatment?

Certain medications may affect your laser treatment if they are photosensitive (such as Roaccutane and Retin A which can cause pigmentation). If you are taking any medications it is best to advise your Skin and Laser Specialist so that we can ensure the best possible treatment results for you. Depending on the medication course, we may suggest performing treatments at least 2 to 6 months after taken.

Will laser work if I have a hormonal condition?

To remain hair free, “touch up” treatments will be required for most clients with hormonal conditions.
Females who are experiencing Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) can achieve excellent results over the entire body, but to remain hair free on the face, touch up treatments will be required every 3 to 6 months.

Do you recommend treating fine hair?

We recommend not treating areas where the hair is fine and sparse. In the best interest of clients, we may not treat these areas to avoid stimulation of hair growth. If you are uncertain whether you should treat an area of concern, please feel free to contact our team and we will assess the area for you. At The Laser Lounge we will give you our honest opinion and the benefit of our extensive experience.

What’s the difference between Laser and IPL?

Numerous clinical studies have proven that Laser is far more effective for the reduction of unwanted hair when compared to IPL. The following points highlight a few of the differences between both technologies influencing the overall effectiveness of treatments:

1. Light;
Laser light is monochromatic (one light colour). IPL is NOT monochromatic.
The various colours in IPL decreases the effective outcome of the treatment as only some colours target hair reduction. 3. Ability; Laser is coherent, meaning that the light is totally reinforcing and doesn’t cancel itself out whereas IPL is NOT coherent and is NOT reinforcing making it less effective in the treatment of hair reduction. IPL although not the preferred method for permanent hair reduction, works effectively for photo rejuvenation. IPL skin treatments are safe and non-invasive and work to erase skin damage without disrupting the skin’s natural surface.

2. Speed;
Laser light is collimated, meaning it’s slow to diverge or spread out allowing 100% of the light to be effective in treatments of hair reduction. IPL is not collimated and so is quick to spread out making it less effective in the treatment of hair reduction.

Why is laser hair reduction called permanent hair reduction instead of permanent hair “removal”?
Lasers cannot target red, white, grey or blonde hair and most people have multiple colours of hairs. Laser technology provides for 95% (give or take) permanent reduction in hair growth. We cannot say permanent removal without acknowledging the possibility of the remaining 5% of hair.

Immediately following a laser treatment, clients should experience either slightly reddened or goose bump like skin. It feels somewhat like a mild sunburn. This effect is very normal and will disappear shortly after. Damage to the skin is very rare and only in some few cases, clients may experience pigment change in the skin. If this occurs, the skin will typically return to normal over time. In saying this, our Skin and Laser Specialist team are experienced and are here to ensure you experience a satisfying treatment.
