What is Sun damage?
Sunlight has a profound effect on the skin. Exposure to too much sun can cause many skin irregularities such as premature skin aging, skin cancer, and a host of skin changes. Sun damage may not show up right away, but after some time of unprotected skin exposure, the skin may start to appear leathery, dry, saggy, unevenly coloured, freckly and wrinkly. These post sun exposure side effects can be avoided by wearing sun protection daily and covering up exposed areas of the skin.
The sun has three different types of rays that it emits. They are UVA, UVB and UVC. UVA causes skin cancer and damage to the skin and does not burn our skin or make it feel hot. UVB are the rays that cause sunburn and blistering. The Earth’s ozone layer protects us from UVC rays. Solar radiation releases free radicals, which causes damage to the skin. Spending time in the sun not only risks sunburn, but also an overabundance of free radicals on the skin which ages the skin quickly.
