Congested Skin:
What is Congested Skin?
Congested skin occurs when the skin has a high build up of sebum. Signs of congested skin are blocked pores, uneven skin, dull skin, acne, blackheads and whiteheads, which not only affects teenagers but adults too. Blackheads, tiny plugs in the opening of a follicle or pore on the skin consists of a combination of oils, sebum and dead skin cells. Open to the skin’s surface, the plug becomes darkened as it is exposed to oxygen. On the other hand, whiteheads are closed at the skin’s surface, blocked by cellular debris, but not exposed to oxygen, so remain light in colour. Dead skin cells, pollution, occlusive make up and dirt play a major role in filling up pores already opened by sebum and oil production and each factor may contribute to congestion differently.
Skin Oil and Sebum: Excess oil and sebum production by the skin – contribute to clogging pores and encourage the growth of skin bacteria. If combined with external factors such as dirt, blackheads easily can form.
Toxic Congestion: Blood and lymph supply the skin with its’ nutrition. When toxins that are produced in our bodies’ everyday are not eliminated properly, they are eliminated via the skin, contributing to congestion as well as other issues such as acne and skin irritation.
Dead Skin Cells: Every 3 to 4 weeks the skin replenishes the skin cells. This natural process creates a layer of dead skin cells over the surface of the skin. When not removed correctly, the dead skin cells create dull looking skin and they may plug the pores on of the face, creating congestion and blackheads. When combined with excessive sebum production, this can lead to the formation of white-heads and black heads.
Skin Care & Make Up: Products stopping the skin from breathing and blocking pores are major contributors to congestion. Talc is a major culprit, found commonly in finishing powders.
Pollution & Dirt: The daily environment where you spend most of your time may contribute to your congestion; blackheads and blocked pores. The more polluted the area in which you live and/or work, the more skin pollution you are likely to experience. Dirt can be a breeding ground for bacteria and combined with oily skin can make skin congestion worse.
