Acne:

What is Acne?

Acne is a disease that affects the skin’s oil glands. In brief, the small holes in your skin (pores) connect to oil glands under the skin. These glands make an oily substance called sebum and when the follicle of the skin gland clogs up, a pimple grows.

Acne is found mainly on areas with the densest population of sebaceous follicles; these areas usually include the face, the upper part of the chest, and the back. Most persons experience Acne during adolescence, and this can often continue into adulthood. During adolescence, Acne is usually caused by an increase in testosterone, which people of both genders accrue during puberty. For most, Acne diminishes over time and tends to reduce, especially once reaching the early twenties. Unfortunately, some individuals will carry this skin condition well into their adult lives.

More severe forms of Acne are called ’cysts’. Cystic Acne can appear on the buttocks, groin, and armpit area, and anywhere else where sweat collects in hair follicles and perspiration ducts. Cystic Acne affects deeper skin tissue than does common acne and may require further medical expertise to remove.

Sides effects caused by Acne, other than scarring, can include psychological distress, reduced esteem and in very extreme cases, depression and/or suicide. It is strongly recommended to treat Acne early on, to lessen the overall long-term impact to individuals.
