Acne Scarring

Acne scars are often the result of acne on the skin, more likely pustule, papule, or cystic acne. It occurs mostly on individuals who have suffered moderate to severe cases of acne as more inflammation occurs on the skin in these cases.

When healthy skin tissue is damaged or destroyed, the skin usually tries to repair itself by forming collagen – giving the skin its flexibility and strength. However, sometimes the body overproduces collagen when trying to repair itself, resulting in raised tissue on the surface of the skin (often referred to as hypertrophic or keloid scarring). When the body under produces collagen atrophic scars develop.

Types of Acne scars

Ice-pick scars –deep, narrow, pitted scars
Rolling scars – broad depressions with sloping edge
Boxcar scars – broad depressions with sharply defined edges
Atrophic scars – flat, thin scars or depressed scars
Hypertrophic or keloid scars – thick, lumpy scars
