Acne

Acne is a common, and treatable skin condition. Unfortunately, it affects approximately 90% of teenagers, nearly 50% of adult women and 25% of adults.

It occurs when hair follicles become clogged with excessive oil from the skin, when dead skin cells accumulate, and/or buildup of bacteria, resulting in pimples. It is most commonly found on the face, chest, back and upper arms of sufferers. The severity of acne is often classified as being either mild, moderate, or severe.

Types of Acne

Whiteheads – white appearance, closed under the surface of the skin
Blackheads – black appearance, open at the surface of the skin
Papules - small red, raised bumps caused by infected hair follicles
Pustules - small red pimples that have pus at their tips
Nobules - solid, painful lumps that are beneath the surface of the skin
Cysts - infections found beneath the skin that contain pus, are often painful
